Reclaiming My Family Vacation in Semi-Retirement

Years of Corporate “Staffing Crises” and “Emergencies” Finally Ends Here

ENTRY: ISSUE THREE

STATUS: 14 Months into “The Bridge”

TIMELINE: 640 Days to Rule of 55 Execution (Jan 1, 2028)

Disclaimer: This is my personal journey, not financial, tax, or investment advice. Rules like the Rule of 55 are subject to IRS changes—always verify with current guidelines at irs.gov or a qualified professional.

Semi-Retirement Strategy: Transitioning to a 25-Hour Work Week and Reclaiming Lost Weeks.

Most people look at my $71,000 pay cut and think I’m crazy. But they’re looking at the wrong ledger. In this entry of Project 2028, I’m declassifying the math of my first real ‘Spring Break’ in 32 years—proving that a lower salary can actually lead to higher cash flow and 100% presence with my kids.

For three decades, “Spring Break” wasn’t a vacation; it was a staffing crisis. In the retail world, while other families were packing suitcases, I was approving overtime and managing the chaos of a 300-person team. I was the guy on the laptop at the hotel pool, checking refrigeration alerts while my kids asked when I’d be done.

This year, for the first time in 32 years, the laptop stayed shut.

Project 2028 isn’t just about hitting a number in a 401(k); it’s about buying back the “Spring Breaks” I have left before my kids grow up. I realized that while the bank account was growing, the “Time Account” with my family was being spent—and the IRS doesn’t let you roll over lost years.

The Audit: The Financial Cost of Corporate Burnout and Extreme Sacrifice

In 2023, a “vacation” actually cost me more in stress than it saved in rest. I did a deep dive into my old 2023 calendar to see what a “Corporate Spring Break” actually looked like versus today.

Metric2023 (The Corporate Lie)2026 (My New Reality)% Change
Active Work Emails~100/day (while “off”)ZERO-100%
“Emergency” Calls4-5 per weekZERO (Phone is Blocked)-100%
Presence Score3/10 (Physically there, Mentally at work)10/10 (I am the chauffeur/chef)+233%
Guilt FactorHigh (Feeling like I’m failing both sides)Zero-100%

The Whistleblower Note: The “Essential” Trap

The biggest lie management tells you is that you are “essential” to the operation. They want you to believe that if you don’t answer that 2 AM alarm call, the building will burn down. The talent pool is really thin and you are the only one that can be relied upon.

The Declassified Truth: They call you because you answer. By being the responsible one, you are subsidizing their refusal to build a better system with your own sanity. The talent pool isn’t thin, it doesn’t exist because they haven’t spent the time to grow it. And why should they when they have you? When I transitioned to my 25-hour bridge role, I simply stopped answering. Guess what? The stores are still standing. The world kept spinning. But now, I’m the one who sees the soccer goals and hears the stories after school.

The Math of the “Dad Win”

People ask me how I can afford the $71,000 pay cut. Here is the declassified math:

  • Childcare Savings: By being home during the school break, we don’t have to pay for a sitter. That’s $1,600 kept in the family ledger this month alone.
  • The Stress Spend: In 2023, I’d spend $500 on convenience (fast food, last-minute fixes) because I was rushed for time or too exhausted to plan. That cost is gone.
  • Tax Efficiency: My lower income means I’m keeping a higher percentage of every dollar I make.

You can now follow along with my wheel strategy LIVE tracker. It updates every time I log a trade (which is several times weekly)

Whistleblower Wisdom: “The Corporate Lie of the Month”

The Corporate Lie: “We value your work-life balance and want you to fully disconnect on your PTO.”

The Declassified Truth: They value your output. If they truly valued your balance, they wouldn’t CC you on 100 emails a day while you’re in the mountains. Disconnecting isn’t a gift they give you; it’s a boundary you have to enforce with a sledgehammer.

The Tactical Adjustment: I no longer ask for time off. I inform them of my availability. When you hit FI, the power dynamic shifts. You aren’t a servant; you’re a consultant who owns his own clock. When I take my time off and the boss or my old colleagues try to guilt me by saying “Wow it must be nice?” I reply, “Yes, it is!”
