Your Coast FIRE Number: (When can you leave your corporate job?)

The EarlyRetirementEarl Financial Freedom Compass – Phase 2: The Accelerator

Lesson 34: Coasting Into Early Retirement

You’ve learned how to build the engine. Now, I’m going to show you how to take your foot off the gas without the car stopping. This is the “Magic Tipping Point” of the entire Early Retirement Architect journey.

1. What is Coast FIRE? (The Definition)

Coast FIRE is the point where you have enough money in your retirement accounts that—even if you never contribute another cent—your portfolio will grow through compounding interest to fund your full retirement by age 65.

  • Traditional FIRE: You save until you have the full $2M+ and then you quit.
  • Coast FIRE: You save until you have a “seed” large enough (say, $500k) that it will grow into $2M+ on its own over time.

Once you hit this number, you are “done” with retirement savings. You only need to earn enough to cover your rent, groceries, and fun. Your “Future Self” is already a millionaire; your “Current Self” just needs to pay the bills.

2. The Case of “Coasting Craig”

Let’s use a case study to see the math in action.

  • The Human: Craig is 40 years old. He’s tired of the corporate grind.
  • The Goal: Craig wants to fully retire at age 62 with a $3,000,000 Wealth Machine.
  • The Situation: Craig has $500,000 in his investment accounts.

Craig opens Tab 4 of the 5-Tool Calculator Suite:

If Craig stops saving today, his $500,000 will compound at an 8% growth rate for the next 22 years.

The Math BreakdownThe Result
Current Balance$500,000
Future Value at Age 62$2,718,270
Target FIRE Number$3,000,000
Required Coast Number$551,822
Additional Lump Sum Needed$51,822

The “Aha!” Moment: Craig realizes he isn’t $2.5 million away from freedom. He is only $51,822 away. Once he saves that last $51k, he can quit his high-stress job and become a part-time fly-fishing guide (or anything else) because his retirement is already fully funded by the “Market Gods.”

3. Using Tab 4 (Your Stress-O-Meter)

Your 5-Tool Financial Freedom Calculator Suite has a dedicated tab just for this.

Download the Tools: Get the 5-Tool FIRE Calculator Suite Here

How to Read the Results:

  1. Required Coast FIRE Number: This is the “Finish Line” for your contributions.
  2. Years to Compound: This is how much time you’re giving the market to do the work for you.
  3. Lump Sum Needed: This is your “Sprint Goal.”

4. Why This Changes Your Life Today

Even if you don’t quit your job the day you hit Coast FIRE, your mindset shifts. You stop fearing your boss. You stop stressing about the 401k contribution. You realize that every dollar you earn from now on is for living, not for saving.

Your Homework: Find Your “Escape Date”

  1. Open Tab 4 of the Calculator.
  2. Input your real numbers: Current Age, Current Balance, and Target Age.
  3. Check the “Lump Sum Needed”: If it’s $0, you’re already coasting. If it’s positive, that’s your target. Focus all your energy on hitting that one number.

The Lesson: You don’t have to win the whole game at once. Coast FIRE is the first major victory that proves the “Wealth Machine” is working. It’s the moment you realize the corporate world no longer owns your future.
